Edinburgh Scrabble® Club
Venue: Royal Overseas League, 100 Princes Street, Edinburgh, EH2 3AB (between the Frederick Street and Castle Street junctions).
Transport: Numerous buses on Princes Street. About 500 metres from Waverley railway station. Parking available in Frederick Street and George Street (free after 6.30).
Time: Monday evenings, 7.00 - 10.30, September to June (with two-week break at Christmas and New Year).
Meetings: Typical attendances of 12-16 members each club evening. The club itself has no Scrabble sets, timers or OSW, but enough members bring them each week for visitors and others to use.
Membership: The club has about 24 members. Membership costs £12 a year, or £6 if joining after Christmas (so unable to play in some competitions).
Weekly cost (contributes to room hire): £2 for members; £1 for newcomers on their first night; £3 for visitors. Newcomers and visitors are welcome.
Teams: The club has three teams in the Scottish Scrabble League, Waverley, Roc and Eagles; Waverley were the league champions for 2005. Club members also enter as teams in the National Scrabble Club Tournament; one club team won the UK final in September 2006. The club organises an annual match for a team of six against Glasgow, usually in February, and has enjoyed similar matches against other Scottish clubs in the past.
External Tournaments: The club organises two one-day tournaments open to all, usually played at Liberton Kirk Hall on Saturdays. The Edinburgh Open is usually in early October and the Lothian event is usually in March or April.
Internal Club Competitions: Most competitions run throughout the club season, from September to June. We encourage the use of clocks . There is an all-play-all, in which we play every other member once, a knockout and plate competition with best-of-three matches, a handicap competition with points handicaps to favour weaker players, and a ratings ladder for all other competitive games. There are two themed fun nights, one at Christmas and one at the end of June.
Disabled access: If you require assistance into the building there is a bell clearly marked below the front right entrance column which, when pressed, will bring staff out to help. Wheelchair access is to the back of the building and staff will escort you round. From the back of the building access is gained by using our stair climber which fits to wheelchairs. In the building there is a lift to all floors.
